Ecoscape became a wholly employee-owned company.

2023
John Dunn Challenge Park

Ecoscape’s AILA award-winning play space fosters social and health benefits in a socio-economically disadvantaged area, creating an inclusive, high-quality space on a modest budget.

Bake Club!

A new tradition emerges at Ecoscape. Once a fortnight, one person bakes something special to share with the team, and we all gather to enjoy their baking creation together. It provides an opportunity to break away from our busy workdays.

2022
Adelaide St office

Ecoscape relocated from North Fremantle to the heart of Walyalup. Situated within the vibrant city centre, the team is now immersed in Fremantle’s diverse culture and rich urban and ecological landscape.

2021
Wadjemup Museum

Ecoscape were awarded the Museums and Galleries National Awards (MAGNA) for Wadjemup Museum in collaboration with Creative Spaces.

Bina Parkland

The vibrant, inclusive park was recognised with State and National AILA awards for leadership in youth engagement, fostering social connection and addressing social issues through authentic community involvement and thoughtful design.

Company values

Over a day-long workshop, everyone at Ecoscape contributed to the development of the values that drive the way the company operates and the approach we take to projects.

2020
Barrow Park Play Space

Ecoscape’s is awarded state and national AILA awards for a community playground rooted in local needs. Designed collaboratively on a budget, it creates a natural play space fostering socialisation and self-expression for families in townhouses and apartments.

St Joseph’s Nature Play Master Plan

The project, awarded an AILA National Award of Excellence, exemplifies culturally sensitive, collaborative design. Through engagement with Mirima Dawang Woorlab-gerring and Waringarri Aboriginal Arts, it fosters community involvement and supports the preservation of Miriwoong culture and language.

2019
New ownership structure

Ecoscape commenced a change in ownership, paving the way for employees to own the company they work in.

2018
Fremantle Urban Forest Plan

Ecoscape won the AILA WA Award for Landscape Planning for a coordinated effort to increase the City’s canopy cover. The Plan aims to enhance community wellbeing and environmental health by providing essential ecosystem services like air and water filtration, shade, cooling, habitat, oxygen, carbon sequestration, and nutrient cycling.

2017
Celebrating 30 years

Ecoscape celebrated 30 years in business, having completed over 1500 projects across Western Australia.

Bilya Kard Boodja Lookout

Ecoscape won the AILA WA and National Awards for Cultural Heritage. The project exemplifies best practice in AILA’s Reconciliation Action Plan, honoring Traditional Owners and the land’s natural history. It’s a meaningful acknowledgment of Aboriginal heritage and a beloved park for future generations.

Millers Pool

Ecoscape received the AILA WA Landscape Architectural Award for Land Management. The innovative scheme enhances habitat value while honoring the site’s unique cultural history. It has been enthusiastically embraced by local residents, the council, and the wider community.

2016
Minor Urban Interventions

In collaboration with artist Steve Tepper, Ecoscape designed modular urban furniture for William Street, Northbridge, supporting informal seating and play. The project was awarded the AILA WA Landscape Architectural Award for Small Projects.

2014
ANEC - Australia’s Northern Eco City

Ecoscape won the AILA WA Award for Research & Communication. The project involved in-house landscape architects, environmental scientists, and spatial planners using GIS and 3D modeling to identify a site for a sustainable city that balanced culture, ecology, livability, and resilience.

PARK(ing) Day

Ecoscape joins PARK(ing) Day - a global movement that reimagines how we use urban space. Ordinary parking bays are temporarily transformed into vibrant public spaces by Fremantle's creative community.

2013
CAPITheticAL

CAPITheticAL was an international competition for a Hypothetical Australian Capital City. As Canberra neared its centenary, designers were invited to reimagine the original challenges, and propose solutions for today's context. Ecoscape's winning submission was ANEC, Australia’s Northern Eco City.

Dom Serra Grove

Ecoscape was honoured with the PLA State and National Parks Award for the bold redesign of Dom Serra Grove. This project exemplified the City of Subiaco’s commitment to water conservation and sustainability, aligning with their Drying Environment Policy, Hydrozoning Strategy and Greening Plan.

2012
Mueller Park Playground

Ecoscape received the AILA National Landscape Architecture Award for Design for Mueller Park Universal Playspace. The project enhances facilities for children with disabilities through the provision of equal access, diverse activities and sensory spaces that encourage exploration via sight, touch, sound, and smell.

2011
The GFC

In response to the Global Financial Crisis, Ecoscape leveraged our skills of landscape architecture, environmental science, and spatial planning to identify Australia's key future challenges, resulting in ANEC, Australia's Northern ECO City. This site-responsive analysis shaped a balanced sociocultural and biophysical vision: a resilient, sustainable northern city that attracts populations and addresses future food needs amid climate uncertainty.

2010
Lake Ballard Management Plan

Awarded the AILA WA Planning Award, Inside Australia is a site-specific installation of 51 blackened steel sculptures by Antony Gormley, located in Lake Ballard’s dry bed near Menzies. The Management Plan established best practices for governance and funding, protected the natural and Indigenous cultural values, and maintained the sculptures and landscape as per the artist’s vision.

2008
Wadjemup Coastal Walk Trail

As a Western Australian tourism icon, the island's rich social, environmental, and cultural values required a sustainable trail. The Rottnest Island Authority developed Wadjemup Bidi to provide access to its natural beauty and history for over 500,000 visitors annually. Wadjemup Bidi received AILA National and WA Landscape Architecture Awards, including the WA Award for Excellence in Planning.

2007
Celebrating 20 years

By our 20th anniversary, we secured over 115 projects in a single year, partnering with mining, infrastructure, private developers, architects, and government clients across Western Australia. Our multidisciplinary team - landscape architects, ecologists, scientists, zoologists, and botanists - was proud to lead impactful projects nationwide.

ISO 9001 Certification

Ecoscape became a Quality Assurance certified business in the disciplines of environmental science and landscape architecture.

2006
Growing team

Ecoscape expanded as our team grew, leading to the purchase of our Burns Street property. This created a unique Fremantle-based studio with gardens and outdoor spaces for gatherings, cooking, and knowledge sharing.

Booyeembara Park

Drawing on ecological principles, our team transformed the Montreal Street landfill into bushland, parkland, and a cherished local recreational space. The project received AILA National & WA Awards for Environment and the WA Award for Excellence in Design.

2004
Roe Highway Stage 7

The 4.6 km section of Roe Highway through Banksia woodland required a collaborative alliance between the contractor, engineer, environmental scientist, artist, community, and landscape architect. The project delivered exceptional results, recognised with the WA Case Earth Award.

2000
North Fremantle office

Ecoscape expanded north of the Swan River into North Fremantle, becoming a key local business. We actively supported, collaborated with, and engaged with other North Fremantle professionals.

Ecoscape goes online

Ecoscape entered cyberspace with a cutting-edge website.

1997
Celebrating 10 years

After a decade, Ecoscape went digital, marking our first year using computers for data storage, mapping, and reporting. We collaborated on and delivered around 30 projects in environmental science and landscape ecology.

1989
Pakenham St office

With a growing staff, Ecoscape moved into the centre of Fremantle to Pakenham Street.

1987
Ecoscape is founded

Ecoscape was founded in our first studio space, located in the Old George Hotel, East Fremantle.
