Excellence in Community Contribution Landscape
St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School is located in Kununnurra, in Miriuwung Country, near the boundary of WA and the NT in the northeastern corner of the Wyndham-East Kimberley region and is close to natural wonders such as the Cockburn Ranges.
The diverse and rich landscapes of the East Kimberley provide a strong sense of place for the local community and served as inspiration for the playground design, which aims to deepen the connection between the school and the broader community.
The Master Plan was shaped through extensive consultation with key stakeholders, including students, teachers, Traditional Owners, local businesses, local government, the Language and Cultural Centre, and the Arts Centre.
Extensive consultation grounded the values and enabled the Master Plan to integrate Country and Miriuwung culture and language into both the curriculum and school environment
The combination of nature playgrounds, external learning hubs, bush tucker gardens, language nest programs, and potential collaborative art and recycling programs creates a pathway for cultural and environmental integration within the school.
The project was recognised with an AILA WA Award for Excellence in Community Contribution.
