Kadidjiny Park

A significant public parkland within an established suburb.

An on-going community involvement program

Located on the old Melville Primary School grounds, this project provided the City with a unique opportunity to create a significant public parkland within an established suburb. The project was developed in two stages – first the playground, followed by the remainder of the parklands.
The involvement of the local community was a key strategy in the design and construction process. Students from Melville Primary School and Melville Senior High School were part of an on-going community involvement program to provide artworks for Kadidjiny Park including painted fence pickets surrounding the playground and mosaics throughout the parkland. Future mosaic artworks are to be created by the high school students for installation on the tree planters.
Over 45,000 individual plants and trees were planted throughout Kadidjiny Park as a demonstration of the vegetation complexes that occur around the greater Perth area. During construction, a ‘Planting Day’ was organised with students from Melville Primary in order to educate the students about planting techniques and foster a sense of pride and stewardship over the parkland.
Since opening in 2010, Kadidjiny Park has colloquially become known as ‘Dr Seuss Park’ due to its bright colours and striped totems.
