The East Fremantle Foreshore aims to revitalise the river’s edge at Norm McKenzie Reserve.
Revitalising a riverside community hub in East Fremantle
Ecoscape has worked alongside the Town of East Fremantle, DBCA and M P Rogers & Associates to revitalise the river’s edge at Norm McKenzie Reserve – a much-loved community hub on the East Fremantle foreshore.
A popular stop for morning coffee and a key pause point for pedestrians and cyclists, the riverside site experiences both high foot traffic and environmental pressure. Erosion of the existing limestone revetment highlighted the need for a more sustainable and accessible design solution. The project addresses:
• Replacement of the limestone embankment with a structurally sound edge and new public seating terraces
• Creation of a welcoming, shared space that improves access to the river and caters to a range of users
• Restoration the riparian zone with native foreshore planting that enhances local biodiversity.
Community input was essential, with locals invited to share their insights on a place they know best. We’re proud to have contributed to thoughtful, nature-led design along our local waterways.
