Dwerda Weeardinup — the place of the dingo spirit — is one of the few remaining physical hills of Walyalup (Fremantle), rich in cultural significance and deep Dreaming stories.

Dwerda Weeardinup / Cantonment Hill
Known today as Cantonment Hill, this sacred site is linked to the Seven Sisters, the Waugal (rainbow serpent) and Yondock (ancestral crocodile) Dreaming stories. From this hill, the dingoes watched – ensuring Yondock’s spirit would not be reunited with its tail.
After years of disuse, the City of Fremantle took ownership in 2010, setting out to restore its cultural, ecological, and community value. In 2013, Ecoscape joined this journey, working closely with Traditional Owners, community groups, and consultants to reshape the site with care and cultural respect.
The result? A parkland that weaves together history, storytelling, and recreation — supported by a $2.2M Lotterywest grant and completed in 2017.
Today, Cantonment Hill is a beloved Fremantle family park, overlooking the river and the Rainbow.
