Mueller Park Universal Playspace
Mueller Park Universal Playspace was commissioned by the City of Subiaco as an initiative to improve facilities for children with disabilities. This high-profile project is located in Mueller Park, between Bob Hawke College and Perth Modern School.

Public consultation was carried out with parents and children by the City of Subiaco to identify desirable elements within a playground. Ecoscape developed these comments into a theme of exploration that informs the design of the play space.

Equal access is catered for in the playground through the inclusion of activities and spaces that allow the exploration of the physical world through the use of sight, touch, sound and smell. Specialised play equipment items are also included for use by children with a range of abilities, including a water play area with a custom ‘flower’ fountain. Shaded barbeque and seating areas are provided to allow parents and carers to relax while observing their children.
The plants in the play space are predominantly West Australian species originally catalogued by Ferdinand von Mueller, the botanist and explorer from whom the park takes its name. These have been selected to withstand wear and tear, as the planted areas are an integral part of the play experience. Mounded grassed areas are also provided to add topological play to the range of experiences available to children.
