The Rottnest Island Authority recognises the need to cater for over 500,000 visitors daily with a walk trail that allows access to the natural features and the cultural history within this ‘A’ class reserve. Ad hoc access has caused significant environmental impacts to the island’s coastal formations and vegetation; and therefore it was imperative that the coastal walk trail highlight and manage the island risks.
Through our cross discipline collaboration, the trails are intended to provide engaging interpretive features and alignments to fully experience the cultural and natural dynamics of the island. The collaboration sets out to design and manage a trail that creates an attitudinal shift encouraging the informed visitor to conserve and respect the island, and learn from such experiences in a positive, modern way.
In 2008 Ecoscape received the AILA WA State Award, the AILA WA Landscape Planning Award of Excellence and a National AILA Landscape Planning Award for the project.
