Newmont Boddington Gold Life Of Mine Extension Project VIA

Newmont engaged Ecoscape in 2012 to assess the landscape values and potential visual impacts associated with the proposed LOM Extension Project in accordance with current landscape planning guidelines.

Newmont operates the Newmont Boddington Gold mine which is located in the Shire of Boddington, approximately 17 km northwest of the town of Boddington. Newmont proposed to expand this mine by adding additional waste rock dumps and residue disposal areas. As part of this expansion Newmont requested approval to extend the Life of Mine (LOM) to around 2052 for mining and 2060 for processing activities.

Newmont engaged Ecoscape in 2012 to assess the landscape values and potential visual impacts associated with the proposed LOM Extension Project in accordance with current landscape planning guidelines. The project objective was to undertake a visual impact assessment (VIA) from travel routes such as the Albany Highway and the Bibbulmun Track, a regionally significant walk trail in the vicinity of the project area.

Ecoscape conducted a viewshed analysis and prepared photo montages to assess the potential visual impact during construction, operation and after rehabilitation. From this analysis the visual impact was identified to be minimal from most of the assessed travel routes and therefore the natural landscape character was retained. The LOM Extension Project was assessed as a prominent impact during construction and operation but minimal after rehabilitation from high points along the Bibbulmun Track that had panoramic views.

Mitigation strategies were suggested for view locations that would experience prominent visual impacts during construction and operation. These recommendations could then be further discussed between Newmont and relevant stakeholders to determine the acceptability of visual impacts experienced by observers.
