Lake Ballard Management Plan

Ecoscape were engaged to create a management plan for the establishment of a best practice model of governance and funding; protection of the natural and Indigenous cultural values of Lake Ballard, protection and maintenance of the sculptures, and promotion of tourism. Ecoscape received the 2010 AILA Landscape Architecture Award for Planning for the project.

“Inside Australia” by Antony Gormley is an installation of 51 blackened steel sculptures that populate the parched bed of Lake Ballard in Western Australia’s Goldfields. The purpose of the Management Plan was the establishment of a best practice model of governance and funding; protection of the natural and Indigenous cultural values of Lake Ballard, protection and maintenance of the sculptures, and promotion of tourism.

Ecoscape consulted with stakeholders to understand the diverse goals of management; identify “anomalies” in the procedures; and ensure that the Installation would benefit the local people that made the exhibition possible.  A staged master plan included triggers to development based on tourism numbers.

Ecoscape received the 2010 AILA Landscape Architecture Award for Planning for the Lake Ballard Management Plan.
