Ecoscape were commissioned by the Town of Subiaco to explore and design wayfinding concepts for the new Carter Lane precinct. The policy embraces the development of a directional signage system to provide precise information at key decision points throughout the public domain.
Wayfinding is described as the strategies people use to find their way in unfamiliar or new settings, based on their perceptual and cognitive abilities and habits. Successful wayfinding means that the navigator can move in the space from their present location to a destination, even if the location or the destination is imprecisely known.
Locations were based on key entry and exit points with particular focus on the locations that are closer to the Subiaco town centre.
The concept mimics some of the current street furniture and artwork through materials and colour scheme, such as the rustic steel “I” beams that have been preserved from the original structure as well as the red colour seen on the artwork adjacent Carter Lane Park. The concept uses two beams to bolster the signs strength and durability and incorporates the City of Subiaco’s symbolic olive branch logo laser etched onto the lower portion of the signs.
